ISRAEL (May 2011)

Israel declared its independence on May 14, 1948 and neighboring Arab states invaded the next day. Since then, Israel has fought a series of wars with its Arab neighbors. Now those states are having problems of their own in what is being called the Arab Spring. As such, I'm very mindful of the following travel advisory: "The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of traveling to Israel, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, and about threats to themselves and to U.S. interests in those locations. The Department of State urges U.S. citizens to remain mindful of security factors when planning travel to Israel and the West Bank and to avoid all travel to the Gaza Strip." With this in mind, we are going to avoid the Palestinian territories. As we are staying with H's aunt and uncle, we'll hopefully return some day to visit some of these missed areas.

Given the present climate, one might think that it's not the best time to visit. Then again, Harold Camping has predicted the end of the world on May 21 and the final battle between good and evil is supposed to take place here. Maybe I can get good seats. (Of course, now that the day has come and gone without event, he's reivsed the date to October 21. Guess I'll have to watch from afar).
